Let’s recall some basic key facts from the Follow-up of the 2019 Ministerial Declaration – Implementation of all International Drug Policy Commitments of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime: The basic purpose of 2009 and beyond was the determination to address and counter the world drug problem and to actively promote a society free of drug abuse in order to help ensure that all people can live in health, dignity and peace, with security and prosperity… And the deep concern at the high price paid by society and by individuals and their families as a result of the world drug problem.
With our partner The Fundacion para la Mejora de la Vida, la Cultura y la Sociedad, FDFE invited some speakers from our Say No To Drugs associations across 20 European countries to tell about and illustrate the different ways to preventively face the expending drug problem and protect the youth.
This 67th Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) was held in the VIC (Vienna Internatl. Center) in the premises of the huge United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna (Austria), sheltering also the Atomic and Space buildings. Vienna is also hosting the OPEC (Petroleum Export) and OSCE (Security and Cooperation in Europe).
Thus to comply with the allocated time of 50 min for the whole presentation, were selected speakers from Austria, Belgium, France and Italy, with the FDFE Representative as Moderator. He introduced the subject, the materials available from The Truth About Drugs and each speakers. He ended by a short conclusion, stressing on the importance of a real age-appropriate teaching on drugs repeated throughout schooling.
The audience was composed of members from Permanent Representions to the UN, from different world countries and other Non Governmental Associations, all having the special UN accreditation. Many were taking notes, which was one of our aim: What can be done to counter the drug problem!
Each speaker had been warmly applaused regarding the good job done at youth level, in the prevention field.
In his conclusion the Moderator stressed again on the vital necessity of an early education on the drug subject. The side-event ended up with some questions from the audience, that were answered.
